Getting to Glasgow

Arriving in Glasgow

There are several options of getting into Glasgow from around the United Kingdom.

Train/rail - Glasgow has two main train stations; Glasgow Central Station and Glasgow Queen Street Station, both of which are located in the city centre. Glasgow has an extensive train network from major cities in Great Britain. Scotrail, Avanti West Coast, and Caledonian Sleeper are some of the train companies that serve Glasgow.

Bus/coach - Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station is the main bus station, serving many cities from across the United Kingdom. Several bus companies operate to Glasgow, such as Megabus, National Express and Citylink.

Plane - Glasgow International Airport is a large aviation hub, serving many domestic and international destinations. Alternatively, delegates can fly into Edinburgh International Airport. There is an express bus service which runs to Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station from Glasgow International Airport and Edinburgh International Airport.

Getting around Glasgow

Getting around Scotland's biggest city

Subway

We expect many delegates will find accommodation within the city centre. From Monday to Saturday the Subway runs from 6:30am to 11:40pm. Trains are usually every 4mins at peak times and every 6-8mins during off-peak times. To do a full circle of the Glasgow Subway it takes 24mins.

The price of tickets for the subway are £3.30 for a return ticket (there and back). We recommend delegates staying in the city centre buy an All day ticket (unlimited travel for one day) £4.20 for the 29th and 30th March 2023. You can travel between the city-centre and the west end in one day as many times as you would like.

The main stations in Glasgow are Hillhead (the closest subway station to the University), and Buchanan Street and St Enoch (both are subway stations located in the city centre).

Buses

Public bus is another popular mode of transport in Glasgow. Several bus companies operate in Glasgow; we highly recommend using First Bus as it is the most extensive bus network in Glasgow, with many bus routes operating between the university and other areas, including the city centre. Download the 'First Bus' app to find the most convenient way via bus between Point A and Point B.

You can buy a student 3 day bundle for £12.00

Walking

Walking in Glasgow between the West End and city centre is very straightforward, it can take 30-45mins to walk. It is even easier walking around the West-End of Glasgow, where the University is located. However, for delegates visiting for your first time, it can be a bit tricky, like all cities anywhere you visit.

Uber

In Glasgow, Uber can be a very useful and affordable choice, especially if there are many of you wanting to travel to a certain location. Just download the Uber app on your phone, follow the instructions (including setting it to Glasgow of course) and you're good to go!
